Figs for the Fall Wedding!

As we inch closer to the first day of fall this Saturday, I am beginning to think about fun ways to bring the warm colors and flavors of fall into wedding decor and florals. Figs are a particular fall favorite for their flavor as well as their color that ranges from pale pink flesh on the inside to a deep deep burgundy on the outside. The perfect accompaniment to blush garden roses and almost black dahlias, the fig adds beautiful color and texture to moody and romantic fall floral arrangements.

In addition to the stunning visual appeal of figs, the flavor is quite enticing as well. Today I will leave you with a deliciously warming signature cocktail idea that will have all your guests storming the bar for another! Cheers!

A Rum Cocktail with Fig and Thyme

In a mixing tin, muddle the figs with the thyme simple syrup.

Fill the tin with ice.

Add the light rum, apricot liqueur, allspice dram, and lemon juice.

Shake well and double strain into coupe glasses. Optionally, double strain into cocktail glasses filled with ice and top with a splash of seltzer.

Garnish with a sprig of freshly cut thyme.

Thyme Simple Syrup

  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 3-4 sprigs freshly cut thyme

Using a 1:1 ratio of water to sugar, measure out your desired portion. The recipe above yielded enough for about eight cocktails.

In a saucepan, over medium heat, dissolve the sugar in the water. Remove from heat.

Add the sprigs of thyme and let the mixture steep for at least 15 minutes.

Strain off the solids and let the syrup mixture cool.

Store in the refrigerator for up to one month.
